Cliburn's piano competition announces semifinalists

The Associated Press

FORT WORTH, Texas — Eighteen semifinalists have been chosen from the 75 contestants in the Van Cliburn Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs.

One of the semifinalists, announced Wednesday night, is Debra Saylor, a blind pianist who won third place in the 2000 Cliburn contest for amateurs. That experience helped her become more independent, she said, and led to a job as a sales associate in Omaha, Neb.

One Texan, J. Michael Brounoff of Irving, was among the semifinalists.

After the semifinalists perform Friday, finalists will be named. Winners will be named after the finalists perform Saturday.
